What is a call number on a book?

Answer

The call number is the letter number combination on the label you usually find on the spine of the book, but sometimes on the cover of thinner books.  The call number has two purposes:

  1. It is like an address.  It is the location of the book amoung all the items in the Library, sort of like an address.  And like an physical address, it is unique for physical items.
  2. It brings together in the same neighborhood, items on the same or a similar topic.  You can use the number to browse the physical collection.
