What is a call number on a book?

The call number is the letter/number combination on the label usually found on the spine of the book, but sometimes on the cover of thinner books. The call number has two purposes:

  1. It is like an address. It is the location of the book among all the items in the Library, and like a physical address it is unique for physical items.
  2. It brings items on the same or similar topic together in the same neighborhood. You can use the call number to browse the physical collection.
